LAWRENCE WEINER
To activate a part of the Dia:Beacon grounds that were previously inaccessible to visitors, Colossal installed Lawrence Weiner’s site-specific piece CADMIUM & MUD & TITANIUM & LEAD & FERROUS OXIDE & SO ON . . . (1991). The conceptual intervention, visible from the Metro-North Railroad trains that pass the museum, originally conjured art out of language by listing materials central to the practice in the 1960s. Today it unifies Dia’s collection of conceptual art by referring the mediums used by the artists represented inside.
Colossal carefully recreated Weiner’s piece over the course of eight summer days. Multiple pattern reviews ensured that the spacing between each section of the installation was impeccable. Special paints that adhered the metal surface, which expands and contracts with the weather, were provided by the museum.
