Banksy

Banksy

Scenario:
Banksy, an anonymous British artist with roots in the street art and graffiti movements, wanted to place four large scale murals in and around New York’s SoHo in support of a pop-up gallery running for only one month. The artist wanted placement on three major New York streets: Broadway, Canal, and Houston; to be near the nexus of SoHo’s art gallery scene. Colossal had to execute all four walls simultaneously while maintaining complete secrecy about the project.

Solution:
Colossal possesses the unique set of capabilities required to accomplish this project. Our Acquisition team dealt directly with area landlords and partnered with two other media companies to present a suite of one of a kind locations to the Artist. The Artist provided digital renderings of hand-drawn sketches, which our paint team was able to transfer directly, with 100% fidelity, to these four massive wallscapes.

Colossal worked with the Artist’s team for months on site acquisition and preparation. Two of the four locations had never been used for advertising purposes, and the Artist was able to work with the dimensions and characteristics of each wall to create pieces that were playfully site-specific.

The placement of fine art on advertising spaces, by an advertising company, was in and of itself a major focal point of the project. Colossal’s role in the project was to function as any other artist’s tool- as a means to an end. Our ability to exactly translate the Artist’s vision, while working within the confines of complete secrecy and a strict timetable, was a challenge Colossal is uniquely suited to meet.
